Default Is E/R Good?

Never tried an elementalist class but i love ranged combat so I was thinking I'd try elementalist with a ranger. Just wondering how that would work if it would at all...thanks in advanced.

E/R Worked Okay For Me.. Got A Lvl 19 One Atm
But Mine Has A Pet So 2 Skill Slots Are Taken Up By Comfort / Charm Animal Which Some People Say Gimps A Ele's Build...
I Still Thought It Was Good With High Fire Dmg And A Pet 2 Take Aggro Away From The Ele's Squishy Body Lol.

Go Try Yourself

Markus.

Ele with a pet or using a bow is not a good idea. However, as long as it's PvE do whatever you feel like.

Your /secondary profession is of no concern for 99% of Elementalist builds, really. Heck, [[Antidote Signet] alone is worth being an /R.

I always say experiment. Make up random things and go try them out, you might surprise yourself. If I had more time to post this I would bring up a few ideas but gotta run.

Guild Wars in my opinion has gotten to the point to where every profession combination has many strengths, so I recommend always trying new things out.

If your talking about Conjure with a fiery bow that'd be more fit for R/E...I mean it could work but your loosing alot of power that you could have as R/E. I think better for nm would be the usual fire nuker with some utility skills from ranger.

Elementalists with pets dont really work, they take up too many slots for mediocre tanking and damage, so really not worth it

Barrage/Savage/Dshot/Meteor/Mark of Rodgort/Conjure Flame

Hell yeah, that's an awesome build.

For example, Serpent's Quickness for added DPS, Throw Dirt for AoE blindness, Natural Stride for IMS, Storm Chaser for IMS+energy management, Antidote Signet. Ocassionally, traps and a few other skills (troll unguent) can be helpful.

I've used the build OgJTkY2g5B5oN+q8wtap444bAA quite a lot to farm and go through a few zones.

GL and HF!

Serpent's Quickness is an essential ingredient of the old-school invincimentalist, used to keep permanent Obsidian Flesh or Mist Form but since EotN and Glyph of Swiftness that is seldom the best choice.

My elementalist started out as an E/R but the only ranger skill that I ever used was Dshot. That worked pretty well, when my big spells were recharging I switched to a recurve and sniped some key skills. That was, of course, before heroes became available and these days you can just take a dedicated interrupter.

If you're thinking 'spells work at long range and bows work at long range so put them together and it'll be awesome', it's not quite that easy. Keep in mind you can't be casting spells and firing your bow at the same time. Besides, thats not the point of secondary professions. If you're an Elementalist, play an Elementalist, not a Ranger. For an E/R general PvE build, you should take a normal Elementalist build and pick up some skills from your secondary to round off your build. If you want to play with a bow, play a Ranger.

In passing, a quick look at PvX shows that there's no popular E/R build (but there are quite a few R/E). Plus bow mods/inscr are not optimal for eles.

I'll have to back up Marty and Fril. There's no way for an ele to be as good a ranger as a ranger. I started off as an E/R, gave up taking the pet on missions somewhere around Maguuma, and gave up taking the pet on general exploration in the Crystal Desert. It just gimped me too much at that point.

Plus, with a staff or wand/focus, I can pile on a bunch of useful mods. With a bow I can only get a grip and inscription that will do me any good at all. Now my only use for a bow is for pulling.

Really glad I found this thread - I am new to Guild Wars and actually just created an E/R lol! Just got started with him last night so maybe it would be best to start over with a secondary skill that is more useful. Off subject - but as a former WoW player (I know kind of a bad word around here eh?) - I'd just like to point out that everyone I have encountered in game and on the forums for Guild Wars seem so much more helpful and friendly. So Thanks to all of you!

No need to start over, you can change your 2nd profession at any time once you get to a certain stage in the game.

Tbh, I'm exactly like BrettM and started, like you, E/R with a pet. It was fun until the point when my loyal wildcat kept on constantly dying, maybe around Crystal Desert.

No need to start optimal, we actually learn walking by falling to the ground!

Precisely. Plus, until that point I had very few skills available in my chosen line (earth), and no elite skill, so using a couple of slots on the pet was not a problem. Once you have an elite and a selection of skills for making builds, then you start wanting and needing to use those slots.

And it was fun. I miss being able to take Amos on my regular outings. All of my regular non-ranger characters have started out as whatever/R just to have a pet in the early stages. (My ranger just went full-bore beastmaster right from the start.)

Another benefit to E/R (or any/R with a pet) for a new player in Prophecies is that it makes the Doppelganger easy to beat. Later you learn many other easy ways to beat him, but a pet may be the easiest way your first time through.
